As we thought about this classic road trip, one thing was for sure, we are following deeply entrenched footsteps and do not have to break a whole bunch of new ground ourselves. There is a plethora of guides to doing the “old main” or Route 66 trip available. The two I used the most were the National Park Service Route 66 planner and a dog road trip planner from Bring Fido for Route 66.

It’s the night before the start of the trip and the packing is done, sandwiches are made, and the kennel is in the car. Needless to say, Duncan is a bit wound up and his FOMO is in full swing, making it difficult to take a step without looking out for him underfoot. Luckily it was a sunny day and thirty or a hundred rounds of catch in the yard wore him out a bit.

Worn out from fetching and FOMO

So the packing is done, the car is washed and cleaned out, and the itinerary is fleshed out. We have the route, miles between stops, hotels, and the basics noted for most of the major things we don’t want to miss listed. There is time to adjust or get more creative as we go along and all three of us are excited. Our itinerary is attached below.

What is your one ”can’t miss” site?

Or on the other hand, what would you say ”take a pass” to?
