Madison, WI – first stop

We started out with an easy first day drive to Madison.

Home of the Badgers

The first stop was Madison, WI where we toured the outside of the capital (we got there a little late to get into the building, as it closed at 6:00 p.m.). It’s a beautiful building, designed with four wings going out from the central, domed, main building. It was designed by George B. Post and completed in 1917. He also designed the Western Union Telegraph building in New York City, which opened in 1875, the New York Stock Exchange building, which opened in 1903, and others.

I am afraid that I am woefully undereducated in architecture, but I enjoy it when I see it and do love to find both well-known and not so known special architectural gems when traveling. I think this trip will be full of mid-20th century tourist architecture. Any suggestions of what not to miss along the way?

It has amazing lighting at night.

We wandered around the capital square area and ended up having sushi dinner at Red, near the capital. The rolls were inventive and very tasty and the nigiri and sashimi were both delish and fresh. Of course the 20 oz. Sapporos went with dinner quite easily. The rolls were called ‘salmon lovers’ and ‘tsunami’. The tsunami (which is the one sort of in the center of the first picture) was a tidal wave of flavor!

I love sushi, but have never been very adventurous. For any of you sushi lovers out there, let me know what I should try the next time I eat it. What are some of your favorites and why?

All in all, it was a lovely start to this month-long road trip.

Tomorrow we will start by going backward just a little bit and visiting the Cave of the Mounds. I’m looking forward to this out of site National Natural Landmark in Dane County, Wisconsin. Tune in later for this one!
