It Is What It Was by R. Scott Tyler
Freddie ran the rest of the way to the train station. It was pouring rain outside, which slowed him down. He was on his way to see Sam when the thing buzzed his head after it bumped off his backpack.
He yelped and swatted in its direction, and it stopped just out of his reach and seemingly looked at him. With what, though, was the question. It was the size of a Christmas ornament, shiny and silver.
When he got onto the train, he immediately hit Sam’s phone icon.
“Dude, where are you?” Sam answered, “I thought you’d be here a while ago.”
“I had another fight with Dad. He forbids me from seeing you. He thinks you’re a bad influence,” Freddie replied.
“Jeez, he’s the director of a department riddled with scandal over pork barrel spending and public funds mismanagement, and he’s critical of his son, who is in love with one of the nicest guys in the development,” Sam scoffed.
“Who said I was in love?” Freddie replied.
“You did. Last night. Remember when…” Sam trailed off. Freddie could hear the smirk over the phone, so he changed the subject.
“Something weird happened on the train platform,” he said. “I was hit by a Christmas ornament.”
“That is weird, especially because it’s August. But, you’re in a train station in St. Rubins, probably the center of weirdness around here.” Sam said.
“Granted, but guess what else? It hit my backpack before spinning away, and now I can’t find my lunch,” Freddie said as he looked through the outer pocket of the backpack.
Sam knew Freddie’s favorite lunch delicacy. “It snatched your Mars bar?” He asked.
“It was the last thing I checked before I left the house. I know it was there. I think that’s the pocket it hit before bouncing away. That has to be what happened,” Freddie insisted.
“What are you saying? Some Christmas ornament from outer space stole a Mars bar, bigger than itself, I’m assuming, and went zooming off like it just found a treasure?” Sam said, teasingly.
Freddie thought for a minute and replied quietly, “Yes, I guess that’s what I’m saying.”
“Cool,” Sam replied. “Let’s get a box of Mars bars and hang out down there.”
