At Midnight

At midnight dreams intensify

When the moonlight shines strong

Anxiety focuses.

Holes open up in the floor

Or walls

Or structure softens.

Someone’s out there

Who’s never out there any other time

Prodding my mind to fear

Opening my eyes to things

You cannot see.

Tugging at my spirit with

Strong, invisible string.

Like a shadow dance only I

Can see.

Filled with my own personal

Demons.

Only for a minute am I there

Then you break the spell

With your yell

Or your caress.

And I can see again

Or can’t see anymore,

Whichever world you want

To look at it from.

But you’re beside me

And this calms me,

Anchors me,

Takes me back again,

Past midnight.
